I love the summer. It's the perfect time to relax and enjoy yourself, which is why I'm thrilled that Starlight Theatre has announced its lineup of Broadway musicals for the summer of 2023. You'll be able to see some of your favorite musicals performed live on stage at Starlight over the next few months, so don't miss out!
Tootsie (May 19 - 21)
Tootsie, which is a musical with music by David Yazbek and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman, based on the 1982 film of the same name. The plot follows actor Michael Dorsey (played here by Tony Award winner Santino Fontana) who struggles to find work until he finds himself cast in a drama about a man who dresses as a woman to get work as an actress. With help from his best friend Julie (Autumn Hurlbert), Michael/Dorothy must decide whether to pursue a romance with another actor or keep her secret under wraps while continuing to accept roles that will help advance her career.
Jesus Christ Superstar (June 20 - 25)
Jesus Christ Superstar is a musical based on the final week of Jesus' life. The rock opera was released as a concept album in 1970 and was adapted into a stage play in 1971. It became an international phenomenon, with over 20 productions across the U.S., Europe and Australia during the 1970s, making it one of the most successful musicals ever produced. It has since been performed hundreds of times around the world by many different companies over several decades since its premiere, including Broadway productions and multiple tours by major touring companies all over North America.
Legally Blonde The Musical (July 7 - 13)
Legally Blonde The Musical is a musical comedy based on the 2001 film of the same name. It follows Elle Woods as she heads off to Harvard Law School after spending her summer in Paris and falling in love with another student, Emmett Forrest.
Legally Blonde The Musical currently runs on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre. This production opened on April 29, 2007 and has been running ever since! Legally Blonde The Musical was nominated for 8 Tony Awards in 2013 including Best Book, Best Original Score and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Laura Bell Bundy).
Rain - A Tribute to the Beatles (July 21 - 23)
Rain is a tribute to the Beatles. It's an original musical created by Michael John LaChiusa and Sybille Pearson, celebrating the music of The Fab Four. Rain is also a love story about a young man who falls for his first female crush—who happens to be his best friend's girlfriend! Rain was first performed in 2013 at The Public Theater in New York City, followed by a run at London's Olivier Theatre from 2014-16.
The musical is based on the concept album of the same name released by The Beatles in 1969. It's a concept album that tells the story of a young man named Jimmy, who falls in love with his first female crush—who happens to be his best friend's girlfriend!
1776 (July 25 - 30)
1776 is a musical with music by Sherman Edwards, lyrics by Peter Stone, book by Peter Stone and Thomas Meehan, and directed by David Saint. The story is based on the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It was adapted into a film in 1972; both versions have been recorded as cast recordings.
The musical was produced on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre, where it ran for 1,217 performances. The production won five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Score. It also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. In 1973, a film version of 1776 was released.
Jagged Little Pill (Aug 1 - 6)
Jagged Little Pill is a musical based on the 1995 album of the same name by Alanis Morissette. The story focuses on a woman's journey to self-discovery and empowerment as she navigates family, friendships and romantic relationships. The musical won multiple awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2018.
The show is directed by Tina Landau and features music by Morissette, lyrics by Glen Ballard and book by Diablo Cody. The musical opened on Broadway in 2018 after several developmental productions across the United States.
Come From Away (Aug 29 - Sept 3)
Come From Away is the true story of a small town in Newfoundland that welcomed thousands of stranded passengers from around the world when US airspace was closed following the 9/11 attacks. Through song and dance, audiences will be transported to this small community and experience how they came together to build a new life in a strange land.
Come From Away has received international acclaim for its innovative production style and narrative that explores what it means to be an American today. This show has won four Tony Awards®, including Best Musical Revival, as well as six Drama Desk Awards®, including Outstanding Musical Revival; two Olivier Awards® for Best New Musical (British equivalent of the Tony Award®); five Outer Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding New Broadway Musical; three Lucille Lortel Awards including Outstanding Revival; two Drama League Performers of Year Award nominations for Gavin Creel (Best Leading Actor) and Jenn Colella (Best Actress), among others; seven Helen Hayes Nominations for Best Production & Direction by Christopher Ashley along with Best Choreography by Kelly Deviney & Carrie Wiatt (who also choreographed “Hamilton” on Broadway); two Theatre World Awards — one each for Jenn Colella & Jennifer Simard — as well as countless other awards across North America and abroad.
